The Aikido Bridge Friendship Seminar is an internationally known five day camp held at Jiai Aikido in beautiful San Diego, CA from January 16-20, 2020 (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend). Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan started the Bridge Seminars at Jiai Aikido in 2007.


This year marks the International Bridge's 14th year and will once again be a big celebration with fantastic group events. Thursday night through Monday afternoon there will be 25 classes, taught by some of today's most experienced Aikido instructors.

Throughout the seminar attendees will have many opportunities to train, and/or relax, socialize, and enjoy some of San Diego's best attractions. Jiai Aikido is minutes from the beach,multiple family friendly destinations, and kids are allowed in the dojo during the seminar...so bring the family. Jiai Aikido will have plenty of recommendations for local events or landmarks to enjoy. Limited housing is available at the dojo for a small fee.

Hiroshi Ikeda is founder and chief instructor of Boulder Aikikai. He began his study of aikido in 1968 at the aikido club of Kokugakuin University in Tokyo. Upon graduation, he trained regularly at Hombu Dojo and at Saotome Sensei's Remeijuki Dojo. In 1978 he moved to the U.S., and in 1980 established Boulder Aikikai. Ikeda Shihan is affiliated to Hombu Dojo through Aikido Shimbokukai, of which he is a Board Member and Vice President.

He is one of the most sought after aikido Instructors worldwide, and a frequent Instructor at aikido seminars in the U.S. and abroad.

Haruo Matsuoka Sensei, 6th Dan

Ikazuchi Dojo, Los Angeles, CA

Haruo Matsuoka Sensei is Chief Instructor and co-founder of Ikazuchi Dojo. He has 40 years of Aikido training and has been a full-time professional instructor since graduating from college in Japan. With a resolute focus on deepening his understanding of the art, Matsuoka Sensei focuses heavily on research and development. He has established exchange programs with some of the world’s great martial arts masters, such as Dan Inosanto and Kenji Yamaki. He leads seminars in the US and internationally, but limits these events to those that will focus on his own development and that of his students. He was a direct student of Seiseki Abe Sensei, one of the closest students of the Founder. His Aikido has appeared in numerous films, and he was instrumental in bringing awareness of Aikido to the US after moving to America in the 1980’s with Steven Seagal, his first teacher.

Lee Crawford Sensei, 6th Dan

Aikido Northshore, Kirkland, WA

Lee Crawford Sensei, 6th Dan,  is Chief Instructor at Aikido Northshore.  Crawford Sensei began her aikido training in 1980 under the direction of Akira Tohei Shihan at the University of Wisconsin Aikido Club.  After relocating to Seattle in 1988, she became the Assistant Chief Instructor for George Ledyard Sensei at Aikido Eastside in Bellevue, WA.  In 1995 Crawford Sensei opened Aikido Northshore in Kirkland, WA.

Crawford Sensei has trained extensively under the direct instruction of Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan. She also includes Kevin Choate Sensei and Patty Saotome Sensei as having strong influences on her aikido.

In 2014 Crawford Sensei was awarded the Ueshiba Juku designation by Saotome Shihan.  This honor identifies those who are in a direct line of succession from O'Sensei  through Saotome Shihan.

Lisa Tomoleoni Sensei, 6th Dan

Lisa Tomoleoni Sensei received her 6th Dan directly from Moriteru Ueshiba, Aikido Doshu. She spent over 13 years in Japan training at the Aikido World Headquarters and teaching Aikido professionally at a dojo in Tokyo. Tomoleoni Sensei is Director and President of the Aikido Shimbokukai, an organization Officially Recognized by the Aikikai Foundation and Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. Additionally, she is the Chief Instructor of the Abiding Spirit Aikikai in Crystal Lake, Illinois, and a Main Instructor at Jiai Aikido in San Diego, CA.

Kayla Feder Sensei began her Aikido training in 1973 at the age of 9 and has trained continuously for 46 years. She studied directly under Morihiro Saito Shihan, 9th dan traveling to Iwama, Japan in 1980. Feder Sensei has also trained with and been strongly influenced by Doran Shihan, Nadeau Shihan, Saotome Shihan, and Ikeda Shihan. She received the rank of 6th dan in 2004.

Feder Sensei has taught seminars throughout the US, Europe, and Israel. In addition to her Aikido accomplishments she received a Masters degree in Holistic Health Education from JFK University in 1998.

Feder Sensei’s teaching style supports the individual growth of each student. She has created a warm and welcoming community at Aikido of Berkeley.  Feder Sensei also includes yoga and meditation practices as part of the training at Aikido of Berkeley.

Tom Liu Sensei, 4th Dan

California Aikido Association

Tom Liu Sensei began his Aikido training in the early 1990s under Frank Doran Shihan at the Aikido West dojo and the Stanford Aikido Club.   He received the rank of Yondan (4th Dan) from Doran Shihan under California Aikido Association in 2016.  Liu Sensei also practices Tai Chi, the Alexander Technique, and meditation and has been a regular Instructor at Jiai Aikido for several years. 

His primary interests are the exploration of the principles of mind-body integration and the development of integrated and relaxed power. 

Lia Suzuki Sensei, 6th Dan

Lia Suzuki Sensei began training in 1982 and is National Director of Aikido Kenkyukai International USA. For nearly 10 years, she lived and trained intensively in Japan, under Yoshinobu Takeda Shihan, as well as the late Yamaguchi Sensei and other notable masters. She currently is based in Los Angeles and travels extensively, leading seminars throughout the world. Her mission is to foster inclusion in the Aikido world and to increase Aikido's popularity among youth and millennials.

Ken J. Good is a former Naval Special Warfare operator at SEAL Team One. He was the Honor Graduate of BUD/S Class #105. His military experiences included all aspects of land, sea, and airborne special warfare applications, including the instruction of techniques and doctrine to members of foreign military unira..

He has trained thousands of military, law enforcement, and security professionals over the past 30 years through a variety of institutional and commercial enterprises. Mr. Good holds patents on several products designed for use in combative environments.

Cat Strada Sensei began Aikido in 2007 under Jeff Sodeman Sensei. In 2009 she assumed leadership of Jiai Aikido and now serves as Dojo Cho and Chief Instructor. Her focus is on Applied as well as Traditional Aikido training. She has has the great fortune to study under teachers such as Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan, Frank Doran Shihan, Mary Heiny Sensei, Morihiko Murashige Shihan, and others. She will be teaching Applied Aikido.

Jackie Vanderburgh

Jackie Vandenburgh returns to the Bridge seminar again this year.She is a professional fitness trainer, as well as a MMA fighter. She is  co-founder of Girl Active Life, an organization with a mission to encourage and support women to lead active healthy lives. She will be teaching basics of MMA.
